This was the first Crossley delivered to Luton in 1946 and served Luton Corporation until scrapped in 1963. Following the war, major fleet requirements were necessary and 60 Crossley DD42/3Ts with automatic turbo transmission were ordered. These were seen as the natural replacement for the successful Daimler fluid semi-automatics which the pre-war drivers had become used to. There were to be 12 Highbridge and 48 Lowbridge vehicles but due to supply difficulties the order was reduced to 32. Despite their initial popularity these buses were to prove most unsuitable, as was found with many other municipalities. They were unreliable, with very heavy fuel consumption. In 1953 replacement AEC constant mesh gearboxes were fitted at the AEC repair depot at Southall in London.
