Public transport started in Sunderland in 1879 with horse tramways and The Corporation electrified the system in 1900. Buses were first bought in 1929 and they completely replaced the trams in 1954 when a new livery of Brunswick green and cream replaced the old red and cream. The Transport Department was taken into Tyne & Wear Passenger Transport Executive in 1973. Thirty double-deck buses were delivered in 1958 of which 232 was one of six Guy Arab IV models with Gardner 5LW engines and bodies by Roe of Leeds. These worked from Fulwell garage.
